Canada’s electronic logging device (ELD) mandate is effective June 12, 2021. While the US rules require the self-certification of ELDs, this is not the case in Canada. To be used in Canada, ELDs must be tested and certified by a third-party certification body before being used.
Canada’s Minister of Transport requires that ELD’s used in Canada be certified by a third-party certification body.
US carriers operating in Canada that are subject to the federal hours of service regulations are required to use a third-party-certified ELD effective June 12, 2021. Carriers using an ELD provider who is not third-party certified will need to switch ELD providers if they wish to continue operating in Canada. (NOTE: J. J. Keller a third-party certified ELD.)
Third Party certified providers must meet a rigorous set of criteria established by the Standards Council of Canada to become an accredited certification body. ELD providers will need to contact the third-party for details on how to submit their devices for testing and certification. Transport Canada also maintains a list of tested and certified ELDs/ELD providers.
Once the ELD has been certified, the company will provide the ELD provider with a certification number which must be embedded in the ELD’s software.
The Encompass® ELD mobile app currently supports Canadian and US carriers with its border-crossing features and Canadian rule sets. The driver-friendly app works with iPhone® and Android™ devices, helping fleets who need on-the-go flexibility. Learn more.
