Vehicle Inspections

Keeping Your Fleet Running Safely & Efficiently

Vehicle Inspections (DVIRs)

Encompass gives fleets the flexibility of manual vehicle inspection entry, as well as automated entry using the Encompass® DVIR mobile app.

Fleets that perform inspections in compliance with FMCSA rules and as a best practice actually reduce downtime, prolong the longevity of their fleet and minimize safety risks. Encompass cloud-based records provide readily accessible proof of compliance with the FMCSRs and due diligence in the event of a crash.

With Encompass eDVIRs and the mobile app you can:
  • Customize inspection criteria

  • Upload photos of vehicle defects from a smart device

  • Manage timesheets

  • Use iPhone® and Android™ devices

The Encompass® DVIR app automates DVIR recordkeeping and improves operations through timely communication of defects and deficiencies. eDVIRs come standard with the J. J. Keller® ELog system.

Encompass® DVIR App

The Encompass® eDVIR mobile app makes it easy for drivers to comply with FMCSA and company-directed DVIR recordkeeping. It streamlines the communication process and improves operations through timely notification of defects and deficiencies. The app relays information, including photos, directly to the Encompass back office, alerting impacted staff of defects on any vehicles or units so repairs can be done quickly.

The Encompass® DVIR App offers customizable inspection criteria checklists so you can accommodate all vehicle classes, even specialized units. The app works with iPhone®, iPad® and Android™ devices.

Encompass maintains vehicle records with best-in-class reporting and alerts and substantiates the defect resolution process.

FAQs

There are eleven parts & accessories that require inspection at the end of each day:

  • Service brakes, including trailer brake connections
  • Parking (hand) brake
  • Steering mechanism
  • Lighting devices and reflectors
  • Tires
  • Horn
  • Windshield wipers
  • Rear vision mirrors
  • Coupling devices
  • Wheels and rims
  • Emergency equipment

There are two types of enroute inspections required by the FMCSRs. They include:

  1. Checking that the cargo is secure (§392.9), and
  2. Checking the condition of the tires (§397.17

Cargo securement inspections are required within the first 50 miles after loading, and then every 3 hours, 150 miles or at a duty change, whichever comes first. Drivers transporting hazardous materials must check their tires before beginning the trip, any time the vehicle is parked, and then at the end of the trip.

Three signatures are required on the DVIR when there is a defect - the driver reporting the defect, the official overseeing repairs, and the next driver to use the vehicle.

The use of an e-DVIR can help address many of the issues brought on by a paper system, making it easier for regional and long-haul carriers to manage the process.

When the inspecting driver submits the e-DVIR with a defect, it is automatically forwarded to the person responsible for reviewing DVIRs. If a repair is necessary, this person can immediately arrange the repair, even if the vehicle is 500 miles away. Once the carrier official gets word that the repair has been completed, they can digitally sign the e-DVIR and forward it to the next driver who will use the vehicle. If it is not known who the next driver will be, the carrier official can load the e-DVIR into the system to be signed by the next driver, once one is assigned. The next driver will then digitally sign the e-DVIR and submit it for retention.
