Roadcheck 2018: Are You Ready?

Next week marks CVSA’s annual Roadcheck event.  This year’s 72-hour Roadcheck will take place June 5-7, when thousands of roadside inspection officers will come out en masse to conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers.

This intensive roadside inspection (RSI) effort, which takes place throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is your best opportunity for making a positive impact quickly on your Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) data.

This is the first Roadcheck event to take place in the era of ELDs, so it’s no surprise that the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is placing special emphasis on hours of service for this year’s event.  As well as emphasizing the hours-of-service and ELD regulations, officers will be downloading drivers’ electronic logs, when possible, and checking for compliance.

Hours-of-service violations were the top reason drivers were placed out of service during Roadcheck 2017. The leading hours-of-service violations found at the roadside last year were:

  1. Log form & manner
  2. Log not current
  3. Driving after 8 hours without a 30-minute break
  4. False logs
  5. Driving after the 14-hour limit

It’s more important than ever for drivers to know and follow the logging requirements and hours-of-service limits that apply to them. If using electronic logs, make sure each driver knows exactly what type of device they are using – whether an ELD or an automatic on-board recording device (AOBRD) – and what they need to do to get their logs to an inspector.

Drivers should know how to navigate the device and be able to explain it, and they must be able to show any related documents that must be in the vehicle, such as a user manual and other instructions, along with blank paper logs. Drivers eligible to use paper logs or time records should be able to explain why they are exempt from needing electronic logs, and their paper logs (when necessary) must be neat, accurate, and up to date.

Ensure drivers know what to expect during an RSI. Drivers should be able to understand and respond to the inspector’s instructions and hand motions. Also discuss appropriate behaviors during the inspection.  There is little reason to challenge the motives or the manner in which the inspection is conducted.  A courteous and respectful attitude will make the inspection go much smoother.
