Managing Compliance and Complexity

MANAGING THE DRIVER HIRING PROCESS

It's no surprise - fleets are focused on hiring and retaining good drivers more than ever before. With sign-on bonuses averaging $7,000 at surveyed carriers, the cost to replace a fully trained driver exceeding $10,000, the risk of productivity losses to consider, and a driver shortage projected — fleets need to hire right the first time. Inaccurate and insufficient applicant information wastes time and money. While incomplete files increase the risk of accidents and audits.

The J. J. Keller® Encompass® Fleet Management System helps you decrease costs by standardizing the hiring process and eliminating redundant tasks. It also streamlines the truck driver applicant process and reduces the risk of non-compliance by ensuring your fleet complies with all DOT hiring requirement and paperwork.

#1 HIRING FAQ: What if a former employer doesn’t respond to a Safety Performance History records request?

At minimum, document your good faith efforts to obtain this data from them. Sections 391.23(c) (1) and (c)(2) use plurals (i.e., attempts, efforts) so you must try to contact the former employer on more than one occasion. If a former DOT-regulated employer does not respond, you are still compliant so long as you have this documentation. The FMCSA recommends (does not require) that motor carriers report those former DOT-regulated employers that fail to respond.
